Vermont Love: Hilary and Mo

Hilary and Mo got married last Fall in a barn in Dorset, Vermont. Their guests all stayed at the Equinox Resort and Spa in Manchester, Vermont. First of all- what an amazing hotel! This place has everything: {said like Stefan from SNL}– a spa, clay shooting, hiking, yoga and even falconry- it’s a dream. Hilary and Mo could not have been a sweeter couple to work with. Their planner, Xochitl, from the amazing company AaB Creates, was a fantastic help and talent and together we all created a Wes Anderson inspired wedding suite to reflect both their personalities as well as the unique venue.

The entire suite was hand illustrated and printed flat on double thick Crane Lettra stock. We wanted it to have a sense of luxe to it so we let the paper bring that out. One of the main ideas Hilary and Mo brought to the table was concept of creating a “crest”. We didn’t want this to feel like Ye Olde Crest of England but more like what someone might get if Ralph Lauren and The Royal Tenenbaums had a baby- you follow? I started with the classic crest shape then added antlers to frame it up. Mo loves elephants so I added those in the middle with their hand lettered monogram. This became an image that they used through their day of. I had the RSVP card show the classic “Welcome to Vermont” sign that you see when entering the state. We decided to do a post card for the RSVP as it fit their overall feel and worked well. My personal favorite piece is the details card. On the front, I illustrated all the amazing things that the Equinox had to offer and on the back, it gave the guest a breakdown of the weekend’s schedule. The entire suite is wrapped in a rustic twine and topped off with a kraft hang tag with their crest printed on it. Overall, I love this suite as it’s classic without being stodgy or stuffy. Well done you two, congrats!

Retro Cape Cod Invites: Kendall + Jeff

Kendall and Jeff were married this past summer in amazing Cape Cod. When Kendall and I first started talking about her invites, we knew that we wanted to create something that felt retro and fun. I immediately thought of a vintage travel brochure,  like something you might get when planning a family vacation in the 1950’s. You’d fill up the family station wagon, pack a cooler and drive down the dreaded Rte. 3 during the hot summer months for a Cape Cod vacation. This was my inspiration for the project.

Kendall was very excited about the retro idea and wanted to incorporate illustration in the design as well. The colors were inspired by hydrangea flowers, which Kendall used on her wedding day. One of the things I love most about using a brochure for your invite is that it’s concise. Instead of giving your guests several pieces they need to carry with them, you’re giving them one  piece with all the necessary information. Brilliant! For the RSVP, we kept with the retro vacation theme and created a post card for the guests to fill out and return. We wanted the design to feel like something you might find at a souvenir shop {only a little more tasteful!} Overall, this suite is fun and light but does a great job at conveying a feeling and aesthetic that would continue through their big day.

Gold Foil Invites: Patty + Enrico

When I picked this job up at the printer I was beside myself giddy; I was in gold foil heaven. For this piece, it was all about the “pretty”. We wanted everything in this suite to feel lovely and special. When I first met with the bride, Patty, we talked about creating a lovely, hand drawn border that would encompass her Asian heritage as well as her husband’s Tuscan roots. Patty has a vision that included lots of citrus, greens and vines as well as notes of both cultures. I went about illustrating the border in pencil first, then outlined everything with a fine tip pen to get all the details perfect. Patty wanted her invitation to feel pretty but also rustic so we added bits of hand lettering into the refined typefaces to create a combination style. The entire border and ampersand are gold foil and the rest of the design was done in navy letterpress. We duplexed the weight of the paper so the piece felt even more substantial.

The navy envelope, Florentine paper liner and belly band were the perfect compliment to this gorgeous invitation. We channeled our inner Rumpelstiltskin and tied the entire suite with a super fine gold twine to compliment the foil. This invitation inspires me to always make some extra time for the “pretty” because, hell, it looks good.

Martha’s Vineyard Wedding Suite

After all the crazy weather we have experienced over the last week and a half, this invitation suite brings me right back to summer with beers on the back deck and the sun on your face. Joanna and Peter got married this past Labor Day weekend on the island of Martha’s Vineyard.  Joanna’s family has a home in Chilmark and she really wanted to capture the essence of the Vineyard as well as Menemsha, the port by their house.

With the design, we started with hand lettering. Joanna was really drawn to the organic style of hand lettering and wanted that to be a main factor in the invite. Because the invitation suite only consisted of one piece, she liked the idea of the invite feeling like a letter someone personally wrote to you. We also worked with watercolor. Since college, watercolor has been my medium of choice. I love the versatility that it allows you. Here, we kept the illustration style very loose and simple which I think perfectly compliments the hand lettering. On the front, we created a seafood heart complete with lobsters and citrus. The couple’s wedding date fills out the center spacing creating a really lovely design. On the back, I did an illustration of Joanna’s pup, LuLu, who is holding a banner that says “Come Hungry!”. We decided to have the invitation be a square shape so it felt more unique when the guests received it in the mail. The card opens and on the inside you have the proper invitation with a simple fishing boat illustration. We put the entire card is an inner glassine envelope for an added nautical nod. I revisited the fishing boats for the front of the envelope and created a custom frame to set the guest addresses in.

We used an anchor pattern for the liner and other supporting elements within the suite. We also created custom stationery to match the invitation with two whales at the top and the anchor liner. Overall I love the looseness and whimsy that this suite has. Sometimes you don’t need a million pieces in your suite, one really awesome piece can sometimes do the trick!

Lighthouse Suite

Happy Monday everyone! I wanted to share our pictures of the Lighthouse Suite that was featured in the most recent issue of Martha Stewart Weddings Travel Issue. We had a lot of fun creating this set as it was completely inspired by the location. A lot of times we focus on the couple and their story but this one was all about the lighthouse itself. This was completely hand lettered and illustrated to create an organic, nautical feel. What I find nice about this is that it’s very simple and we really let the lettering and colors tell the story vs. overloading the pieces with images, colors, etc. Sometimes clean is the way to go. Here we paired it with a red RSVP envelope for an added punch of color. If you’d like to see the suite as featured in Martha, go to your local magazine shop {I sound like a oldie because I actually don’t even know if those exist but let’s roll with it} and grab the latest issue of Martha Stewart Weddings Travel Issue.

Maryland Nautical Wedding

What I love about doing custom work is that each job presents a new challenge, design concept, color story, etc. With some jobs, we pack the envelopes full of maps, details cards, inserts, illustrations and other times, we just keep it simple. Coty and Matt’s invitation suite really illustrates just how awesome simple can be. Coty found a vintage atlas of Coastal Maryland at a flea market and used that as her design inspiration for her big day. When I looked through the atlas, the first thing I noticed was the nautical compass image everywhere. We decided to make that a central icon for her suite. The atlas also used very clean and simple fonts throughout so we wanted that reflected on her invite. The invitation is letterpress with the compass blind impressed for a more subtle nod to the nautical theme. For the RSVP card, I scanned in the cover of the atlas and rendered it a bit so it showcased the area of Coastal Maryland where the couple had their wedding. This piece was printed flat so we could use full color. We kept this suite to two pieces {invite and rsvp} and created a custom liner to help accentuate the compass on the invite.

A Wedding in Umbria- Kate & David

This one is a good one folks. Back in the Fall, I worked with the lovely Kate and David on their adorable hand drawn save the date. This past Spring, we created the wedding invitations for their amazing wedding in Umbria, Italy. We wanted the invitations to feel like an extension of their save the date. For the main invite, I illustrated an image of the couple {and their cute little pup!} on the property where their wedding would be held. The cyprus trees created an aisle like path which I thought would be fun to play up. For the supporting pieces, I created several custom borders and spot illustrations to compliment the main invite. One of my favorite things is the hand-drawn return address on the RSVP envelope- so cute. When it came to front of the envelope, we chose the best in the biz, Love, Jenna calligraphy. Her amazing style complimented the entire suite perfectly. To pull it all together, we wrapped all the pieces in a custom belly band. The suite was printed on a textured Crane stock and duplexed to be an extra thick stock. This adds just a bit more luxe to the entire suite. Bella!

Katie + Matt: A Foundry Wedding

The Foundry is one of New York’s coolest wedding venues. Located in Long Island City, Queens, The Foundry has old world aesthetics mixed with modern charms that make it a coveted venue to host your nuptials. Katie and Matt snagged it as their wedding venue and had an amazing day filled with some of NYC’s best wedding vendors. Flowers by Poppies and Posies and calligraphy by Love, Jenna added to overall beauty of the venue. We were so thrilled to be a part of their big day by creating their wedding invites! We wanted showcase the classic vibe that was important to the couple but pepper the design with some personalized bits and NYC undertones.

Katie and Matt wanted to create a custom logo that they could use throughout their wedding suite and day of elements. New York City holds a very special place in their heart so I came up with the idea to create their custom logo based on an old NYC subway token. The couple wanted a hand drawn map to compliment the suite. The map shows several key areas in the city that are important to Katie and Matt, including their neighboring Upper East Side brownstones {how lucky!}. With charcoal gray and crisp white being the main two colors, we used a soft sage green to compliment the look in the envelope liners. Katie and Matt wanted to create a clever way to share their wedding URL without placing it on the invite so we created a custom hang tag that uses their logo and had their wedding URL below. It’s a very simple yet functional touch.

The entire suite was letterpress printed on Crane Lettra stock. I love how fresh the design feels while still packing a punch with the personal elements. Looking forward to sharing some amazing shots for their big day soon!

Palm Springs Wedding Invites: Megan + Josh

Megan and Josh are one of my favorite clients from this year! Their enthusiasm for life and one another is completely infectious. We had so much fun with their save the date that I couldn’t wait to see what we came up for their invitations. The wedding was two weeks ago at the ACE Hotel in Palm Springs. We wanted to keep the design on par with the retro feel from the save the date. Megan and Josh had so many elements that made up their story that we came up with the idea to create an icon to represent each one and let that become the artwork. For example: Josh is a doctor, the couple met rowing, they are both from Seattle, they are avid readers…. you get the idea. We created all the icons in a graphic style {to keep with our theme} and used the couples retro inspired colors to help illustrate the concept even further. For the RSVP card, we created a custom logo {that was later printed on striped pool towels- obsessed} and placed it on top of a chevron pattern to compliment the design. We wanted the backs of both cards to feel very bold while letting the fronts feel open and clean. For the day of elements, Megan and Josh re-used a lot of their icons and created some great pieces that we’ll share here soon!

Philly Suite

We’re spreading the Philly love this week at SCD! You may remember a quick sneak peek of this Philadelphia driven suite a couple weeks back and here’s the final reveal. It’s vibrant, it’s fun, and it’s still super sleek with bright and bold kelly green to pop against that deep charcoal grey. Kristen and Adam really wanted to play up their favorite aspects of Pennsylvania’s popular city by focusing on all the great attractions around the neighborhood. The cleverly worded RSVP {not pictured} is a throw back to the city’s two most popular rival cheese steak spots: Geno’s and Pat’s. Fine pen and ink illustrations combined with modern type setting and some real Philly flare make this suite a solid success. Congrats to Kristen and Adam!
