Inspiration Station: Children’s Books

It’s safe to say that the first art I was ever really exposed to or connected with were the illustrations in children’s books. I can remember pouring over the them in my room as a child, wanting to know “how they did that”. In college, my major was illustration and (as with any illustration student) it’s always been my dream to illustrate a children’s book. So when I stumbled across this article, it was a great source of inspiration. Below are a few of my favs from the article, looking at these brings me right back to art school!

Summer Cruising

Last week was a weird week, right? It sort of felt like everyone took a week off. Now we’re all back, bright-eyed and ready for July! It was a hot weekend, temps crept up towards 100 in NYC. In an ironic twist of events, I spent most of the weekend designing holiday and fall themed cards. Nothing will juxtapose the heat like designing a card that says “Let it Snow!”. Hope you all have a great week back at it!

Red, White & Blue

I can’t believe it’s the fourth of July this week! I know I sound like a broken record but man, this year is cruising. The fourth always feels like Summer’s proper welcome party. I hope everyone does something fun tomorrow and enjoys the holiday. Let’s go freedom, let’s go.

JFK + Jackie

Anyone who knows me, knows that I take my Kennedy knowledge seriously. In 5th grade, we had to choose a historic figure from the past to do a book report on. Some girls chose Amelia Earhart while others went for Joan of Arc, I decided to dress in a trench coat and big sunglasses to honor my historic idol, Jackie Kennedy. So when I saw these adorable, candid photobooth pics of Jackie and John, the 10 year old in me shot out of my seat! They look so young and in love. Sometimes it’s just nice to see a non-ironic photobooth pic {that doesn’t include a mustache}.

Totes + Logos

One of my awesome clients sent me this pic of some tote bags her friend screen printed with a custom logo we designed on it. They came out great! I love how clean and simple the logo is. I’m always inclined to go big but sometimes keeping it straight and simple is the way to go. Thanks Jamie!

Inspiration Station: Book Covers

I’ll be honest here, I have a fairly good amount of self-control. I can easily eat one cookie and leave the bag and not think about them. I can go an entire season without really buying any new clothes, I can even give up buying my favorite afternoon tea to save some money. If I try, I can have an iron will. However, my kryptonite has always been books and more specifically, hardcover books. It’s getting so bad that I know the only way to not buy new books is simply to avoid going into to bookstores entirely. During my move last month I came home with two new hardcover books the night before we moved because I just had to “say goodbye to our local bookstore…”

So when I saw this link the other day, it made me quite happy. Book cover art has always been a huge source of inspiration for me. I think most of us would be lying if we said the artwork didn’t at least have something to do with why we picked up the book. Here are a few great covers to inspire us all at the beginning of the week.
